Adam joined My Choice Healthcare in May 2025 as a Maintenance Operative, supporting several of our homes across South Wales.

His journey into the care sector has been anything but ordinary, following a wonderfully varied but always hard-working career path. Raised in South London, Adam’s first taste of work came in his father’s fish and chip shop, where he peeled potatoes and served customers at the till. “My father, being Greek, of course we had a fish and chip shop,” he laughs.

As a teenager, he took on various weekend jobs in retail, getting his fashion fix at Burtons, Next and Gap, with a stint at a tailor on New Bond Street thrown in for good measure - where he even crossed paths with American actor George Hamilton. From there, Adam gained hands-on experience on building sites, trained as an electrician’s apprentice by day and, in a phrase that sounds far more dramatic than it was, worked nights behind bars (in bars)!

Adam went on to spend 15 years in catering, managing bars and restaurants, before moving into retail. He particularly enjoyed his time at B&Q, where he was able to combine his practical building and maintenance knowledge with the leadership skills he had developed throughout his catering career. This experience led to roles managing builders’ merchants, as well as time as an Area Manager for building materials distributor Wolseley and took him from London to South Wales.

Much of Adam’s expertise has been gained through learning on the job. In each role, he took responsibility for areas such as health and safety, maintenance and budget management, developing a strong eye for detail and a practical approach to problem-solving whilst keeping his monthly P&L on track!

After being made redundant in 2017, Adam set up his own plumbing and property maintenance company. He later moved into the care industry, taking on his first role as Estates and Works Manager for Iris Care Group before joining My Choice Healthcare last year.

Adam’s role takes him across six of our homes in South Wales, supporting Glyncornel, Springfield, Luk Ros, Victoria House, Hawthorn Court and Ocean Living, while also helping at other homes when needed. The homes support elderly residents as well as people living with long-term mental health needs or learning disabilities and no two days are ever quite the same. Splitting his week between different homes, Adam plays an important part in helping each home remain safe, comfortable and welcoming for the people who live there. Adam takes great pride in his work and says that he enjoys completing the work personally.

For Adam, joining the care industry has brought a real sense of fulfilment and he says he feels very happy in his role at My Choice Healthcare. He values the opportunity to support elderly and vulnerable people, helping them to feel more comfortable, valued and able to enjoy their surroundings. “I make a point, as much as I can, to have contact and conversations with as many residents as possible throughout the day,” Adam explains. “I honestly feel that I make a positive difference everywhere I work and with everyone I see - residents, staff, visitors, senior management and even the odd stranger along the way.” For Adam, the best part of the role is having the opportunity to make that difference every day.

Perhaps the greatest reflection of Adam’s impact at My Choice Healthcare is the way residents value his presence and look forward to his friendly banter each day. One resident said: “Adam is a great man who comes and greets me every morning and evening before he leaves. He asks if there is anything I need or if I would like the paper. We have had lively chats about my life, and he has shared his story with me. He is hardworking and looks out for us all. He always asks if there is anything I want doing in my room and if I am happy with it. He goes above and beyond and is always a happy, polite soul.”

Adam’s career journey shows that a career in care can take many different paths and that skills gained along the way in other industries can make a real impact on the lives of others.
